Miley Cyrus Shares The Surprisingly Specific Trick She Used To Hide Drug Spending From Her Accountant

Miley Cyrus has opened up about the clever, yet strange method she used to hide the money she was spending on drugs from her accountant.

The pop star—who is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus became a household name at just 13 years old when she took the lead role in Disney’s Hannah Montana, which debuted back in 2006.

Since then, she’s carved out her own space in the music world. And in 2023, she hit a major career milestone by winning her first Grammy for the hit track Flowers.

But like many other child stars who found fame early, Cyrus has faced some serious challenges along the way.

From Macaulay Culkin and Amanda Bynes to Lindsay Lohan and Drew Barrymore, there’s a long list of young celebs who’ve struggled with substance issues.

Miley has been open about being one of them. However, she’s now been sober for quite a while.

In a 2020 interview with Zane Lowe, she said: “I don’t think that everyone has to be sober, everyone has to do what’s best for them.”

She went on to explain further: “I don’t have a problem with drinking, I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past a certain level. I’ve just been wanting to wake up 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.”

Cyrus was in the midst of releasing her album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz back in 2015, which also happened to be during the peak of her drug use.

During that time, she needed a way to keep her drug spending off the books—so she came up with an unusual solution to cover her tracks financially.

The singer recently admitted how she’d hide her drug spending from her accoutantPatricia Schlein/Star Max/GC Images
“The drugs were the biggest cost, which to hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes.” she said while chatting on the Every Single Album podcast. She added: “And so she would get these checks. That happens on touring all the time.”

Looking back on it now, she remembered: “Every time she saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?’ It’s like, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs. We just really want to protect it. It’s really delicate’.”

And with a knowing nod, she admitted: “I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.”

At 32, Cyrus now reflects on that chaotic chapter of her life with a mix of clarity and gratitude.

She shared: “I’m so glad I survived that time in my life. I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I’m very glad I got to do it.”
