In May, Bindi, who is 27, traveled to the US with her mom, Terri, to participate in the annual Steve Irwin Gala. However, just hours after arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada, she experienced a ruptured appendix and had to be rushed to the emergency room.
Bindi, a wildlife conservationist with a significant following, posted a video on Instagram from her hospital bed after the surgery. In the video, she mentioned that she was on the “road to recovery” and expressed her gratitude to the doctors for their assistance.
While removing her appendix, doctors also found 14 additional lesions caused by endometriosis, a condition Bindi has been open about. They successfully removed those as well, along with repairing a hernia that developed after she gave birth to her daughter, Grace, in 2021.
“I am incredibly grateful for the help I received from Dr. Seckin and Dr. Chu at Lenox Hill Hospital. After dealing with a troublesome appendix for months, I had to get help on the day of our Steve Irwin Gala,” she shared in her Instagram caption.
“After talking with Dr. Seckin, we decided that if I flew to New York, he could also check for endometriosis again. The surgery went well.
“My appendix was taken out, along with 14 lesions (after having 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago). I also had a large hernia repaired that I got from childbirth four years ago.

A sad result of her unexpected medical crisis was that she had to miss the event held in honor of her deceased father. Her younger brother, Robert, shared that Bindi still wished to go to the event despite her intense pain, but her surgeon quickly dismissed the idea.
RadarOnline.com now describes Bindi as “heartbroken” for not being able to attend the gala. They also mention that her experience in Las Vegas affected the Irwin family, who lost their well-known father, Steve, to a tragic stingray incident in September 2006.
It was Robert, 21, who took charge of hosting the Steve Irwin Gala in May instead.
“And rest assured, I’ll see you at the next Steve Irwin Gala in Brisbane this November. One day at a time. Time to heal now. Sending my love to you all,” Bindi expressed at that time.
Earlier this year, Bindi revealed that she had been dealing with health issues for ten years before having surgery.
“Dear Friends,” she wrote. “I struggled for a long time deciding whether to share this journey with you in such a public way. It came down to the responsibility I feel to share my story for other women who need support.
“For 10 years, I’ve faced overwhelming fatigue, pain, and nausea. Trying to stay positive and hide my suffering has been a long journey. These past 10 years have involved numerous tests, doctor visits, scans, and more.
“A doctor once told me it was just something women have to deal with, and I completely lost hope, trying to get through the pain. I didn’t find answers until a friend, @lesliemosier, helped guide me toward reclaiming my life.”

Even though they are clearly heartbroken over the loss of their amazing father, Bindi and Robert have worked hard to honor him every step of the way since his death. They continue to run Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia, and both Bindi and Robert are actively engaged in raising awareness for animal welfare around the globe.
